WordPress

The most widely used website software, in two forms. WordPress.com is a hosted service. Self-hosted WordPress is free software you install on a web host you choose, with a huge library of themes and plugins on top.

What it costs to run

WordPress.com plans start around $4 a month on yearly billing and run up to about $45. Self-hosted WordPress is free, but you pay for hosting: about $3–$15 a month on shared hosting, or $20–$100+ a month on managed hosting, plus a domain at roughly $10–$20 a year.

Drawbacks

  • Updates and security are your job: WordPress, themes and plugins all need regular updates, and neglected sites get hacked or break.
  • Quality depends on your choices: a cheap host or a stack of plugins makes the site slow.
  • More moving parts than the all-in-one builders, so more can go wrong.

What agencies charge

Agencies commonly charge $3,000–$12,000 for a small-business WordPress site, and $8,000–$30,000 for larger builds. Freelancers are usually $1,200–$5,000.

Wix

An all-in-one drag-and-drop builder. You pick a template and edit it in the browser, and Wix handles hosting, security and updates.

What it costs to run

Plans run about $17–$159 a month on yearly billing, with hosting included. Monthly billing costs more. Apps and extras add to the total, and your custom domain is usually free for the first year.

Drawbacks

  • Your site lives on Wix. You can't move it to another host, so leaving means rebuilding.
  • Less control over speed and code than a custom site.
  • Once a template is published you can't swap it for another without rebuilding.

What agencies charge

A custom-designed Wix build from an agency usually runs about $2,500–$6,000, and template-based sites $800–$3,500.

Squarespace

An all-in-one builder known for polished templates. Squarespace handles hosting, security and updates, and you edit the site in the browser.

What it costs to run

Plans run about $16–$99 a month, cheaper on yearly billing, with hosting included. Prices vary by region, and a custom domain is usually free for the first year on yearly plans.

Drawbacks

  • Less flexible than WordPress for custom features, and a smaller ecosystem of add-ons.
  • Good for a brochure site or small store; harder to stretch into a complex one.
  • Moving off Squarespace means rebuilding the site on the new platform.

What agencies charge

Agencies commonly charge $2,500–$7,000 for a custom Squarespace site, and up to $15,000 for a complex one.

Shopify

A platform built for online stores. It handles products, checkout, payments and shipping, and hosts the store for you.

What it costs to run

Plans run from about $39 a month (Basic) to $105 (Grow) and $399 (Advanced) on monthly billing, and roughly $29, $79 and $299 on yearly billing. On top of that there are card fees on each sale, around 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, and monthly charges for any paid apps. Check Shopify's page for current rates.

Drawbacks

  • Costs grow with sales: card fees on every order, plus monthly fees for paid apps.
  • Using a payment provider other than Shopify Payments adds an extra transaction fee.
  • Going beyond the themes usually takes a developer.
  • Weaker than WordPress for blog and content-heavy sites.

What agencies charge

Agencies commonly charge $5,000–$25,000 for a custom Shopify store, and more for migrations or custom integrations.

About the prices

WordPress, Wix, Squarespace & Shopify, in questions.

Is this a fixed price?
No. These are starting points, not fixed prices. Every project is different, and we’ll always tell you up front if something isn’t worth building. After a conversation about what you need, you get a quote for the tier your project fits, not an hourly rate.
What if I’m not satisfied with the result?
Every project carries our 100% satisfaction guarantee. At handoff, if you’re not satisfied with the final product, tell us what’s missing and we’ll work with you to make it right.
Do I pay platform fees on top?
Yes. The platform’s own subscription is billed to you directly and runs from a few dollars to around $160 a month depending on the platform and plan. Our price is the build.
What does maintenance cover?
Our standard maintenance plan covers updates, security monitoring, backups, uptime monitoring and small edits, for a flat monthly fee. It’s optional, and easiest to set up at launch. See the Maintenance plans tab for the price.

100% satisfaction guarantee

You should be happy with what we hand over. If you’re not satisfied with the final product at handoff, we’ll work with you to make it right.
